Nikon D700, Samyang 14mm f/2.8 @ 30" f/2.8 ISO 6400

People say kayaking is crazy. I've seen some bad injuries on the river, but the other day a family member took a spill broke an ankle. Not while  kayaking, but wallpapering. It was by far the worst I've seen, and in light of that I've been out of town helping them around the house during their long recovery period. It's going to be six weeks until they can put any weight on it. I had hoped to shoot some night skies, but almost all of Northern California seems to be on fire, and in a week I only got a few fairly clear nights.

Sony NEX-7, Tamron 500mm f/8 Mirror @ 1/10 f/8 ISO 100

If you follow the camera world, there are big things coming up this week with the semi-annual Photokina imaging fair, where companies love to announce their new products. What's of particular interest to me is Sony's new full frame A99. After nearly a year of use, I vastly prefer shooting with the Sony EVF than an optical viewfinder in nearly every situation. It's just too good to see what you're getting and eliminate the obnoxious chimping process that is inherent with traditional DSLR cameras. Of course Sony is marching to a beat of their own here and I'm curious to see if they can pull it off. Apparently both the new Nikon D600 and Sony A99 will use the same 24mp sensor, but the A99 is projected to be nearly double the price of the D600. Let's hope they can fix the A77 problems (small buffer, slow start up, slow controls) if they are going to be asking $2,800 for the A99, while Nikon offers a camera that's guaranteed to have near instant operation, good ergonomics and better lens options for much less. There are some other things worth noting too. Canikon has set the standard that you only leave the flash off on monster flagship cameras. Here Sony is leaving the flash off on what will be the lightest and smallest full frame SLR on the market. I like that, because when I want to use flash it's not going to be the pop-up flash. In a big change of direction for Sony, they have abandoned their proprietary hot shoe mount and gone back to a standard ISO hot shoe. This is sure to piss off everyone that will now be forced to use an adapter to use hundreds to thousands of dollars in Sony flash equipment on a Sony camera. It really looks like Sony is trying to win over Canikon users here, and to do so this camera is going to need cutting edge AF and be able to buffer raw files like a D3S/D4. We'll see.

Of course the rumor of the Sony RX-1, a full-frame, viewfinder less compact with a fixed 35mm lens estimated to be $2,800 makes me think that maybe Sony is that out of touch with photographers.

Speaking of out of touch with photographers, I've been shooting the Sony NEX-7 a lot lately. It's an incredible camera with a few major issues. One of the least complained about, but most appalling, is that the camera (and all other NEX cameras, not sure of their SLRs do the same) is that exposure at high shutter speeds is inconsistent. Thus what could be an interesting panoramic is near impossible to put together, because although my settings were all locked down, each exposure is slightly different.
